The benefits of Infrared Saunas for Detox and Wellness

Infrared saunas have a lot of incredible health benefits. Infrared sauna use can enhance detoxification by opening up detox pathways, helping with blood circulation, joint and muscle pain, relaxation, immune support, skin issues, weight loss, and wound healing. After seeing and feeling the health benefits of infrared sauna use in my own health journey, I knew I had to get one for our clinic, Family Life Wellness, so clients could take advantage as well. 

Now, infrared saunas are different from steam saunas you might find at your local gym. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air, infrared saunas use special infrared light technology to heat the body at the core. As a result, you sweat much more but at a lower temperature. Sweating is one of the oldest, easiest and most effective ways to release toxins. When the infrared light penetrates the cells of your tissue, joints, and muscles, the body releases built-up toxins through the skin, the body’s largest organ. The more we sweat, the more we detox. 

Why do we need to detox?

To give some context, toxins like drugs, pollutants, preservatives, pesticides, heavy metals, and other environmental toxins get stored in our fat, which causes several negative side effects like inflammation, brain fog, weight gain, muscle pain and more. 

When we detox, we are trying to pull these toxins out of the body. However, oftentimes our detox pathways are congested, leading us to struggle with the detox process, with symptoms like constipation, skin rashes, fatigue, etc. Infrared sauna use can help open up your skin and lymphatic system detox pathways to make this process more effective and pleasant.

Expert tip: You can increase the effectiveness of your sauna session by dry brushing just before your session. This will stimulate your lymph system. Note that there is a specific system to dry brushing, I recommend watching a video prior to dry brushing, as you want to make sure you are using strong upward strokes that move towards the core and lymph drainage points.

Infrared sauna use can also help with viruses.

Research shows that high heat, such as experienced in an infrared sauna, can stop or slow the spread of viruses. According to virologist Thomas Pietschmann, viruses are heat sensitive, which means that they quickly become deactivated at high temperatures. For example, 25 minutes in a sauna at 132 degrees F was shown to kill viruses on the skin. 

“Short-term heat shock, as a stressful condition, could induce the expression of heat shock proteins that function as molecular chaperones to protect cells against multiple stresses. […] short-term heat shock alleviated immunopathology and viral replication in lung tissue.”, according to this study.
